Selected work 1; Gender (gouache painting)
Due January 22
About
For my first piece, I wanted to focus on the effects of discriminating gender. I wanted to perceive it as the outer shell being stripped away to this colorful s=inside the represented the person's inn expression of themself, and trying to protect it. The hair tries to pry under the skin to reach and deface it, but the person persists

Amy Sherald
Inspiration
For my current artist, I chose Amy Sherald. I wanted to apply her technique of making the skin this monotone color and the clothing bright, allowing it to stand out from the rest of the piece. Since The idea of my first work is to focus on the area underneath the skin, I found it fitting to incorporate this design choice into the composition. My master artist Alphonse mucha, however, I took as inspiration for the flow of the piece’s hair. The way the hair flow in his art feels like rivers, and I wanted to use this idea to help sketch out my hair as well. His use of simplistic yet detailed faces also stood out to me.

Gouache study
For gouache, I wanted to get a grasp on two subjects; how it works best and refine my shading. I wanted to feel comfortable using it in my final piece and not have to worry about if I was making any major mistakes. The best way to do that was to use a reference with distinct shadows to experiment with a range of colors, while also figuring out how to not make the shadows of putting. I’d start with a base of color, then blend in dark and light between it. However I soon realized that applying too much gouache would cause the paint to crack, causing the smooth texture to be removed.
